visits visits visits

So I've been here over 9 months, and the only person to make it down to the Southwest to visit me was my sister, just before Christmas.  There were other people who made tentative plans, but each backed out for one reason or another.  Jess was supposed to be here earlier this afternoon, but the second leg or her trip (Dallas to ABQ) got canceled; hopefully she will be into Santa Fe later tonight via Denver.  Emma is supposed to arrive tomorrow, and let's hope her trip is smoother sailing.  Jess is just in for the weekend, but Emma is staying through the week.  On top of that, my dad, mom, and brother all show up Monday night, for 8 days.  Pretty sure we'll spend 2 days at the Grand Canyon, and I think a day down to southern NM to see Trinity Site, where the Bomb was first tested.  And to make the next 2 weeks even crazier, apparently Shannon is coming down next Thursday to the following Tuesday to visit some family in ABQ.  What's the deal, people?  After over 9 months and only one person coming down, I have 6 people in 3 groups coming down over 2 weeks?  Craziness.  Not that I'm complaining, cuz it will be good to see old acquaintances and do some touristy stuff in NM again.  Can't wait!

Now I just need to finish cleaning my apt, even though I've been afforded several more hours...

Lots has happened and I have not been updating at all.  Reffing all the playoffs lately has taken away from a lot of my weekends this month, but that isn't to say I am complaining because I really do enjoy it.  And I made a friend as well.  Only took 9 months.

I also went skiing up in Colorado at Breckenridge.  Amazing.  I don't think I'll ever be able to ski in Michigan again.

In other news, things have been going pretty well at work lately.  I am kinda proud of the fact that I have debugged a couple of the systems that I have been put in charge of, so that they crash less often and get us more data.  The boss was fairly impressed when he inquired about things this morning because it seems I am further along than he had thought.  I took this as an opportunity to ask whether there is any possibility for extending my stay here, either by just a couple months or maybe longer.  He said no.  Flat out.  I know it has a lot to do with the current situation at the lab - a lot of projects are short on money so some full-time staff will soon be unfunded, thus management is trying to force them on projects like us that have a bit of extra cash - but I still sort of took it personally that he is not at least willing to look into keeping me around longer; especially since my predecessor stayed about 10 months beyond his 12-month appointment.  So as a result, I realized I no longer really have the fallback that I had hoped for in case I do not have a job lined up immediately after I get booted out of Los Alamos in mid-June.  This worries me.  Sounds like time to get back on that job search...

I just dropped an email to my entire immediate family and a couple extended family members.  The sole reason was to make sure people know that if something should happen to me, I want my organs and whatever else donated.  Weird.

Especially weird because no near-death experience or online article or anything else brought this email on.  I was just listening to no particular song on the radio while driving to a late lunch just now.  I have no explanation for it.  I marked up my driver's license several years ago, but I doubt it is legible anymore; and I may have mentioned it to my sister at some point, but certainly never sent off anything nearly so formal to anyone else in my family.

Anyway, back to work!

"I'm not an atheist and I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God."  - Albert Einstein

Thoughts?

I couple weeks ago I was invited to ref the high school all-star game, which was last night.  They told us up front that we would not be paid, but given the honor of being selected by the coaches, along with the patch we were to receive, they hoped we would accept.  Of course, all four of us did, although I think I am justified in silently griping about the 200-mile roundtrip I had to make.  The game was good, much faster-paced than the normal games around here; but did it ever drag on.  It started at 8:15, and we had expected to be out by 10.  Turns out, they decided to run three 20-minute periods, so we finally left just after 11.  Three of us found a much-needed bite to eat at TGIFriday's afterward.  I found out one of the guys knows a bit about personal investment, so I may just buy him lunch sometime soon and see what advice he can offer me.  I'm sure it will be helpful, given the extremely limited knowledge I have.  Look at me, all grown up and managing my finances.  Creepy.

In other news, the job search continues.  I sent off an application to Northrop Grumman (mostly in Cali) yesterday, and I should send out a couple more this week (one of which to Mass).  My shotgun approach is finally underway.  Let's hope I continue it.
